Botanical Print #5

$500.00
French Artist Deodat Defendahl utilizes Tatakizome, an ancient Japanese craft, also known as hapa zome, that involves pounding fresh flowers and leaves with a hammer to transfer their natural pigments and patterns onto fabric or paper.

This water-friendly and eco-friendly technique uses the natural dyes from botanicals, creating unique botanical prints without the use of water in the dyeing process itself. The craft requires natural fiber fabric, fresh flowers and leaves, a hammer or mallet, and a hard, flat surface to pound on.

Deodat employs his own technique, he finds antique linens in Provence as his canvas, then he places the finished Tatakizome piece in rain water with a small amount of metal oxide. This reacts with the tannins of the plant affixing the colors on the antique linens permanently. Finally he fastens the artwork on canvas with water soluble glue to give it rigidity.

Made in Provence.

Respect of Nature.
